Do you have challenges with your business? You don’t even have to tell me what they are. I already know. I’m sitting here staring at the results of a poll of nearly 80 doulas, childbirth educators and midwives who wrote down their 2 top business challenges. It is painful to read them. I could list over 10 pages of frustrations but it all boils down to the same basic problems. Here is what I'm hearing:

It's true. I struggled for my first year in business. I had been told when I took my classes to put up flyers and that word of mouth would help me. I was also told to go visit with the doctors and they would refer me. I'm sure it doesn't come as a shock to you that these bits of advice DIDN"T WORK! I was so dang frustrated! I was doing something that was so great, so cool that could help everyone and yet it was like no one was hearing me. Worse then that, I'd discuss my classes and people got this glazed look on their faces. |
CAN YOU RELATE?
I remember thinking," Well, my town is just backwards" or "Maybe I'm charging too much?" For at least a year, I just couldn't figure out what was wrong. Why couldn't I succeed in business? Why couldn't I fill up my classes? One day after considering quitting my passion, I decided that I was going to throw myself fully into learning everything I possibly could about business and marketing. I read every marketing book in the library plus dozens more from the bookstore. I took marketing seminars and classes. I interviewed experts. Plus I spent a lot of money and time testing out everyting I could. Basically I tried everything under the sun. Geez, I learned so much and spent so much time and money I felt like I deserved a doctorates degree in marketing. |
Well, it paid off! It worked!
Within a year I was fully booked. I was turning away clients because I didn't have any more spaces in my classes, I didn't want to teach more than 3 groups classes a week and 2 private classes a week. My marketing worked so well that for more than 2 years after I quit teaching, I was still getting 2-3 inquiries a week. I moved on from teaching (although I was bummed in a way because I finally figured out how to run the business and it was so easy) because I wanted to reach many more people at a time. I wanted to have a bigger impact on birth in the US and the world. |

I went on to have a radio show (The Real Side of Birth) and publish a book (Journey into Motherhood). Since I now was a publisher and author, I pursued my quest for knowledge and learned everything I could about getting on TV and in the media. I read dozens of book and spent thousands of dollars on seminars from the top experts. That worked really well too. I've been on TV at least 6 times and been in hundreds of magazines and newspapers. I can now easily get on the local news just about any time I want. |

It was after that that I had an epiphany. Well, I didn’t actually figure it out myself, a doula friend mentioned that it was a shame that no one else knew what I knew. No one else was teaching business and marketing to birthing business owners. I had taught business to a lot of colleagues who'd call me to ask how I was so successful in the business but I never thought of teaching it as real classes. By teaching the birthing business owners like you how to be successful in their businesses, I had a unique chance to make a much bigger impact on birth. I realized that with all the experience I had gained with getting publicity for the book in radio, TV, magazines and newspapers coupled with the classes I had taken from some of the best marketers in the country that I could distill this information into what was important to know for birthing businesses. I'm here to teach you all the secrets that I've spent years learning. You don't have to take the journey I was on to get the answers. You don't have to spend all that money and time to learn this on your own. There are very easy, step-by-step ways to get more business.
